Even a good pump needs some help...
There are many reasons a pump can turn off – power surge, maintenance, re-routing of cables. But, what do you do if the pump does not go back on?
1. Unplug the pump so you don’t burn out the motor. Something isn’t working and leaving the plug in will only make it worse.

2. Open up the pump. It is import to have seen The Reef Aquarium DVD, A Set Up & Maintenance Guide. There we show you exactly how to do this as well as the whole cleaning.

Dirty impeller
3. Here is a dirty impeller which must be cleaned. Do you see all the muck on that impeller? This muck accumulates and over time, can stop a pump from turning and thus working. So clean the muck off and put it back. The impeller should move freely.

4. Close the pump back up and you should be ready to go. It is good to have a ratchet set handy for this. Plug the pump back in and cross your fingers. I have been lucky, in that every time I have ever had trouble, I have done this cleaning and crossed my fingers and the pumps have always worked. I don’t think the finger thing really helps, but hey, if it works, don’t fix it…
